Description
Editor's note: Readers will be aware that Human Rights Commissions and Tribunals are extra-judicial agencies. They are not(yet)part of the regular Court system but in the meantime do a great deal of harm. In Ontario, Premier McGuinty is now using them to enforce the promotion of the homosexual lifestyle in the province's schools. See also "Mayor defies thought police," pages 23-24. What kind of discomfort is so unendurable that it justifies compensation at the rate of $500 per second? In the estimation of the Quebec Human Rights Tribunal (QHRT) it is having to put up with a 60-second Christian prayer at the beginning of a municipal council meeting. Despite the fact that there was no tangible evidence of harm, the QHRT directed the town of Saguenay, Quebec to pay the complainant, Alain Simoneau, $30,000 for having to submit to this apparent ordeal. It also ordered the withdrawal of a religious statue and a crucifix from the town meeting hall.
